Domain Registration
|
|
Domain registration records your 2nd level internet name (ie. yourname.com) with a "registrar". There are many registrars out there and they all operate under rules put forth by an organization called "ICAN". That is about where their similarity ends.
There is a wide variety of service levels and target audiences.
When we provide registration services for our clients we do so through Bulkregister.com. This service is tailored for web hosting providers and allows us to manage all the names centrally. Names can be locked to prevent accidental or fraudulent transfer and they can be automatically renewed. Providing the registration services is mostly a convenience for our clients and for us. Bulkregister is not the cheapest nor the most expensive registrar. We recover registration costs from our clients at $15/year/name.
You may use any registrar of your choosing. If you do so you must also remember and manage any passwords and to pay the registration fees and credit cards you may have with that service. Once a domain is registered you typically don't have to do much more with the registrar.
We have found that tracking down the password and the registrar and admin contact information for domain names that have been registered with other registrars can turn into a big hassle for our clients.
You should also be aware of catchy "loss leader" domain registration offers. If you see a price of less than $6/year you can be 100% sure that there are hidden fees and hooks involved. Many ICANN registrars now, especially the ones that advertise the price less than $6, are involved in a second hand domain name business. Please see http://mapname.com/domainname-system.html for more information on this issue. (This is not an endorsement of the folks at mapname.com, they however documented the issues with sub $6 registrations and they provide registration services as well.)
It is possible to "transfer" domain names from some of the major registrars to our account at BulkRegistrar. Doing so adds 1 year to the registration life and costs $15. We often recommend doing this to eliminate/consolidate the number of providers that our clients have to deal with. Transfering does not affect your "ownership" of your name. It changes who is providing the registration services.
When we register a name for a client, the client's name is put on the registration. Your names belong to you.
The one key piece of information that is recorded by the registrar (besides the ownership) are the names of the name servers. This information gets stored by the "root" name servers for the Top Level Domain (i.e. ".com", ".net", ".org"). It tells the root servers what servers out on the internet will have the detailed information about your domain. See DNS
